Tentacle Shading Tutorial, Pass 9

Pass 9, Shine

Here again I used the lighting reference, drawing all the lit areas in Affinity. These were then coloured them white and (again) blurred and to an 'Overlay' layer.

If these highlights were left as a 'Normal' layer, they'd just add white to the image, making things look washed out. By setting them to 'Overlay' they again bring out and emphasis the color as they brighten, helping things look more vivid and real.

Also again I also needed to cut out the places where the blur reached into somewhere it shouldn't, like above the near shoulder, around the tentacle between the breasts, around the tentacle wrapping round the arm, etc. Cutting out these sharp edges helps make the image look more real, implying depth and volume (where one area is darker than the areas around it because these represent different shapes with depth and volume).

While all these shines are blurred, the shines on the lips were blurred far less. This was to make the lips look a more glossy, with sharper highlights implying wetness. This was taken further in the next, and arguably most important part for drawing sexy skin and shiny tentacles: ping highlights.
