Tentacle Shading Tutorial, Pass 10

Pass 10, Pings

Ping highlights are THE most important part of drawing tentacles, or anything that is wet and shiny. They are also invariably used in skin (especially breasts) to make them look smooth and glossy.

These ping highlights were achieved by drawing white lines over the brightest areas. They were blurred only very slightly, and were left as a 'Normal' layer (not set to 'Overlay' for once) to make these spots the sharp, pure white highlights they're meant to be (think of light reflecting off a glossy metallic surface, how it creates bright spots of pure white - that's what this is meant to represent).

Ping highlights are also VERY useful for emphasizing shape, by having them follow the volume they're on - e.g. flowing down tentacles, around the curve of breasts, over the shapes of the lips. Again the lips receive extra attention - the shinier the lips can be the better. But the lips, and many other parts, could still be pushed further.

So now its back to: more refinement, starting with a good old vingette effect.
