Tentacle Shading Tutorial, Pass 3

Pass 3, Line art

Don't worry you didn't miss a page. I'm deliberately skipping steps 1 and 2 here, which are:

1, Reference: finding reference images you like, and asking yourself why you like them, what parts specifically you like.

2, Concept: making rough sketches, seeing what worked, and emphasizing that in the next sketch.

This is because, again, these are not my strong suit. So I'm starting at Line Art, which involves taking a concept sketch (e.g. a photo of a pencil drawing) and drawing over it in a program like Paint Tools Sai or Affinity Designer. You could use Photoshop, but personally I find Photoshop's pen tool to be an exercise in frustration. If you want a version of Photoshop that actually works, check out Affinity Designer. If you want something you can pick up really quickly, check out Paint Tools Sai.

In Affinity I find it best to draw the entire silhouette as one shape (i.e. draw a shape that outlines the entire image), then add extra lines inside for detail. This means you can then recolor the entire image just by changing the color one shape - if the final image turned out to be a little too pale or a little two purple, I can fix this by changing the color of a single shape.

Next step is, refinement.
